About Children’s Dentistry

As a family-oriented dental practice we warmly welcome children of all ages and suggest your child begins regular dental care by age 2. Our principal dentist has completed postgraduate studies in children’s dentistry to help provide your child with the best and most appropriate dental care. We realise a young child can find visiting a dental practice a little overwhelming at first which is why our experienced and caring dental team will go out of their way to help them feel comfortable and relaxed. Our children’s dental services focus on preventative dental care, enabling young children to grow up enjoying great dental health. These services include checkups and cleans, fissure sealants, fluoride treatments, mouthguards and paediatric crowns. We also keep a close eye on the development of children’s teeth and jaws. If we feel it will be beneficial, we will recommend an early orthodontic evaluation which can take place as soon as age six or seven. Sometimes early interceptive orthodontics can be very helpful in correcting problems that may have developed due to oral habits including thumb and finger sucking.

Check up & Clean

How Frequently Should My Child Have a Check-up & Clean?

We like to see children every six months because at this age their teeth and jaws are developing rapidly. By closely monitoring their dental health, we can quickly detect any signs of dental disease or other problems that may require treatment. A professional scale and clean is just as important for children as it is for adults, helping them to maintain healthy teeth and gums and nice fresh breath. This preventative approach reduces the risk of your child developing tooth decay or a tooth infection and ensures their primary teeth will remain healthy and strong until the adult teeth are ready to erupt.

Fluoride Treatment

Will My Child Need Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can help to strengthen tooth enamel and we frequently recommend fluoride applications to provide extra protection for your child’s teeth. This is applied in the form of a fluoride varnish containing bioavailable calcium and phosphate which helps to enhance tooth enamel resistance to acids that can cause tooth decay. Application is quick and non-invasive and the varnish quickly dries to create a smooth clear surface. It remains on the teeth for several hours before being brushed off.

Fissure Sealants

When Should My Child Have Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants are a preventative treatment best applied to your child’s adult back teeth soon after they erupt. These teeth contain intricate fissures that can easily trap decay-causing bacteria. Fissure sealants seal these tooth surfaces, preventing infection and decay by forming a thin protective layer of flowable composite resin or GIC that quickly hardens after application.

Children's Dental Crowns

Can Children Have Dental Crowns?

It is important to ensure a child does not lose their primary teeth to soon as this can affect the development of their adult teeth. If your child has a particularly badly decayed tooth that cannot be restored with a filling then we can remove the decay and will fit a high quality stainless-steel crown covered with durable tooth coloured zirconia, all during the same visit. Our paediatric crowns provide excellent protection for primary teeth until the adult tooth is ready to erupt.

Mouthguards

Should Children Wear Mouthguards during Sports?

Contact and some noncontact sports carry the risk of dental injury and we thoroughly recommend protecting your child’s teeth with a high-quality custom-made mouthguard. Newcastle City Dental can fabricate a well-fitting mouthguard made from tough thermoplastic material which is odour and taste-free. Each mouthguard is individually designed and can be thickened in critical areas providing maximum protection for growing teeth and jaws.
